What is this hole in my 40-201 cabinet?
#1

This hole is directly beneath the controls. The small ring makes me think it had a button or something on it. The other pictures of the 40-201 cabinet that I can find online are too low-resolution or at the wrong angle to tell what was originally here.

A jewel goes in the hole for a light to shine through as an indicator that the radio is on with the cover closed.

Kind regards,

And the jewel was made of Tenite...better known as "The Incredible Shrinking Plastic" because it did shrink over the years, which caused the jewel that was once in your radio's cabinet to fall out and disappear.

This is all good, because I was planning to put a lit momentary switch there! For a moment I thought it may have been a keyhole for a locking mechanism for the lid, but I didn't see any way for that to work.

Thanks.

Imagine that!... A "key-start" vintage Philco Radio! If a on-off key switch to one side of the ac line had really been used in place of the tenite, whew, most vintage Philcos chassis wouldnt need so much TLC these days? Just a thought. (hee hee) Icon_wink

My restoration is obviously not "purist". I seriously did consider making it an ignition like key-switch with an ye olde style lever lock key.

I've decided to make a power button from a freshwater pearl that will be lit from behind with an LED.
