IF Can Capacitor value (SMD)
#1

Hey guy's I have a Admiral 5R11 with a 5R1 chassis the print is here.

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/pagesbymodel...000103.pdf

It had SMD so I have disassembled and removed the mica and trimmed the paddled so they don't touch.
the original cans have been replaced ( probably smd), the resistance of the new cans is the same at 24 ohms per coil 455kc

There is silver mica disease so my problem is this. What value for the caps? The print shows nothing, is there any way to ball park the PF value or do I just start subbing values, if so what is a starting point 130pf?

Thanks Eric

Hey Eric, start by lightly tacking in 100pf caps on both transformers. Then try your radio and see if you can get it to peak out and receive. If 100 pf doesnt work, go up to 110, then 120, then 130pf. Just lightly tack the leads to the transformer terminals so you can remove them to try a different value. I've read that restorers are using 100pf caps in the IF cans, but 100pf doesn't work al the time. I recently restored a Philco 53 - 564 and 100pf caps worked on the first IF transformer,  but I ended up using 120pf in the second IF transformer.  Just experiment and you will get it. Just take your time.
