I like that thought about the WR possibly being a wired remote speaker amp. Yep, it's not a certainty for sure. However, it sounds logical considering what it possibly could have been back then. I sure hope we find out. If I ever find one of these, it's going in there and I'll figure it out as I go. UPDATE; the cabinet is slowly coming back to life.  I'm working on it a little every day. I'll post more later.

I almost wonder if "WR" could stand for Wireless Record-player......like you could attach a phonograph to it, and all the rest of the radios, in the house, including the Philco, could hear the signal. 'Just a WAG from the peanut gallery.....
