Philco 60B (June 1934)
#1

Hello everyone.  I just got a 60B at the Vintage Electronics Expo.  I haven't pulled the chassis yet, but one of the 8uf aluminum electrolytic cans was removed.  Before I track down a new can, has anyone ever seen a 60 with Mershon caps installed?  The reason I ask is that I have all the materials to build two replacement Mershon-like cans.  If the answer is yes, then I'll probably go that route.  If no then I'll  track down an original replacement.  Thanks in advance.  Take care and BE HEALTHY!   Gary

I do not think Mershons were used when 60 were built (1934).

Hello Gary,
I agree with Morzh I don't think they were used if I was at my folks house where my 60 sits I would look but that was last month .

I have two 60s and one 66.

From it I could say that Mershons probably would not be used if only for the reason the capacitors were mounted.
The mount for 60s is more or less the same as in many other radios: it is a clamp, with both caps using an electric-grade cardboard sleeve to isolate from the chassis, with one-bolt tightening of both.
Mershons are through-chassis mount, using nuts.

Shoot! Didn't think of that, the mounting that is! Well, back to finding a replacement can. Will pull the chassis and speaker later this week to seem what has and has not been done. What a shame... it would have looked pretty good back there with shiny, copper cans like the 90. Thanks, Mike. Take care and BE HEALTHY! Gary
