Philco 48-482 Electronic Restoration
#31

I searched far and wide.
Spent over 2 or 3 hrs of my time over two days trying to find exactly what I had.
Found something else. Including this.

He shoots, he scores!! Good deal Morzh! The absolute perfect would be the under chassis wiring from a 20, 30 or 35. Grab from those and replace with regular wire. No one would know unless they pulled the chassis.

Well, yeah, but: if it is the same sleeving, it would likely exhibit the same cracking / breaking apart.

During the evenings this week, I worked on cleaning the metal can that goes over the power transformer. It was pretty rusty, so I stripped it down to bare metal with a wire wheel. I primed, painted, and clear coated it. This cap had originally been soldered onto its base; it functioned as a large heat sink while trying to desolder it, so I ended up using a torch with a small flame. The cap fits tightly in place and I’m afraid of damaging the new paint if I use the torch again, so I may simply leave it pressed in place without resoldering it.

Today I spent a good, long time cleaning the chassis. It cleaned up very well!

I’m waiting on my PCB to get here for the new multisection cap, and then I’ll officially have everything I need. I have decided that I’ll try a more minimalist restoration on this one than I did for the 46-480. Rather than a complete emptying and rebuild, I will replace all paper and electrolytic caps, and then only the out-of-tolerance parts. I will also install a polarized plug and fuse for the power supply. I also have some safety caps to restuff the Bakelite capacitor in the power supply.

The rubber insulation on the wiring isn’t brittle at all. Do you all think I should need to replace it?

Hello jrblasde ,
Wow it really is looking great nice job on the painting !!
Any time I have painted stuff like that I never have tried clearcoat .
Sincerely Richard
P.S. I have been working on a 1980s Realistic Receiver replacing Electrolytic capacitors I replace about 30 !!

Today I received my PCBs in the mail from OSH Park. Here is the physically realized multisection capacitor. I did a test fit on the scrap chassis, and it fits perfectly! I’ll have to remove the old multisection cap from the chassis I am restoring, and get this installed.

I’ve recapped the 48-482. Given that this chassis was in fairly good shape (especially on the underside), I tried to be as conservative as possible in replacing parts. Of course all the paper and electrolytic capacitors got replaced. I also replaced the Bakelite capacitors in the power supply with safety caps. This time the Bakelite housing cracked, so I replaced it with a small solder-on terminal strip. I broke one mica capacitor, so I had to replace it as well. I also replaced a couple of wires with evidence of burns or tears on the jackets. Over all it looks nice!

You’ll notice a wire cap on the AC cord; I am waiting for a fuse socket to arrive in the mail, but still wanted to test it.

I’m working on uploading fifteen-second short videos to YouTube to demonstrate the performance. I have not yet aligned the set, but it already sounds pretty good! I also do not have the speaker belonging to this set. I have given it to a member of the local Heartland Antique Radio Association to get a tear in the cone repaired. I had to test it with the speaker from my 46-480 console.

Looks good.

Sounds very good on AM and especially on FM.

About a week ago I got the 4" x 6" speaker back from being repaired. I should have gotten a picture prior to mounting it in the cabinet, but I forgot. Anyway, it was in good enough shape to be repaired without reconing. There was but one clean tear, and none of the cone was missing.

Here's some photos of the chassis reunited with the cabinet. It's on my desk at home. I decided to bump my 49-906 out of this spot, and put it in my bedroom; this one looks better on the desk.

I still need to perform an alignment, but first I need to get an analog voltage meter. I know from when I aligned my 46-480 that the digital meters introduce some noise to the FM detector circuits which makes the process impossible. I had aligned the 46-480's FM circuit by ear, but I'm really wanting to get the meter so I can do the job correctly.
