Interchangeable antennas
#1

Help someone!! I thought I was buying a Philco 41-280 radio, when I picked it up this evening, the model number is 42-380. My problem is I have an antenna on hold from a Philco 41-280. Will this antenna fit the 42-380? The 42-380 mounts on the rear side of the radio, and the 41-280 fits down the middle backside of same!! Bottom line are they interchangeable antennas??

Thanks,

Jim

Both require the same type of antenna (a few turns of copper alloy wire with a center tap). The 41-280 loop should fit inside the 42-380.

To all,

Today I received my antenna for my 42-380 Philco. It was off a 41-280 Philco. I am having a problem lining up the screws. Does anybody have a backside pic of the Philco 42-380 with antenna installed?

Thx,

Jimy

I was able to compare the antennas online of a Philco 41-280 and Philco 42-380. They are different and do not line up. The 41-280 is a rectangular double wire antenna all the way around, screwing on, at top and bottom. The 42-380 is a rectangular 4 wire antenna all the way around, but "tapers at the bottom". Bottom line, the 41-280 will not fit in the 42-380 cabinet unless wire/cabinet adjustments are made!! So I am still looking for a 42-380 antenna. I want to keep it original. I will trade the 41-280 antenna for a 42-380 antenna. If I cannot find an interested party, I will keep it as a spare for the 41-280 I have. I am currently restoring 3 Philco radios simultaneously; 39-31XF, 41-280 and my 42-380.

I'm sorry, Jim, I honestly thought you would be able to use one in place of the other.

Are you saying the 41-280 loop is physically too large to fit inside the 42-380 cabinet? I guess it is possible, but since both cabinets are the same size and are almost the same overall, I find that somewhat hard to believe.

Ron,

Well, the cabinets are the same, but the housing for the 42-380 is on one side of the back side of the cabinet, and requires less vertical space and has the top and bottom wood mounts to one side as well. Consequently, the correct 42-380 antenna shows 4 all the way around wires that are approx 16" across the top(like the 41-280), but taper down to approx (9" across at the bottom). Whereas the 41-280 antenna is a perfect 16W"X23.5"L rectangular antenna, requiring more space and that is why the screw mounts are in the center. The antenna is too wide to fit in the 42-380 corner and be true to the mount holes. I need a tapered antenna! I guess I could modify the screw wood mounts for the 42-380 and place them in the center and then use the 41-280 antenna, but I prefer to keep it original. I am in no rush, so I will keep on looking!! Let me know if you hear of one!

Thx,
Jim
