I'm going to start on my first pre-1940 Philco--a 610 Code 121. Any thoughts, precautions, hints, warnings, sympathy?

Nothing special - just the typical replace all capacitors and electrolytics. Re-build any bakelite block caps and metal can caps.
Check all resistors for out of tolerance values (+/-20%) and replace as needed. Check all RF and OSC coils for continutiy - also IF and AF transformer windings. Check bandswitch contacts and clean if needed. Then do your dim-bulb or vaiac tests.
