Quick consult needed from experts:eBay item Philco 38-12
#1

Here's the question:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/330901052815?ssP...1423.l2649

This is the Philco 12. However the chassis is from Transitone.
What I am trying to figure out is if the speaker is Transitone or 38-12.
As you know I am trying to replace my 38-15 speaker.

You can see the output transformer says 14A4.
The numbers on the rear of the speaker are obscured but the seller tried to see what they are and wrote that (although she is not sure 100%) they may be
1614 and 1728.

I am not sure that 1) the speaker is 38-12 one, 2) it is a field coil type and not perm magnet one.

I need to figure it out before next 7 hours or so, so I know whether to buy this for parts or not.

That's a 48-200 chassis:
http://www.philcoradio.com/gallery/1948a.htm#d

The 48-200 uses a PM speaker, part no. 36-1614, so that is the '1614" the seller is seeing. Not really suitable for the 38-15 as it needs an electrodynamic speaker with a 1700 ohm field.

Of course, you could use the 48-200 speaker, but then you would have to use a power resistor to replace that 1700 ohm field coil.

Thanks, this is what I though. It was silly of me to hope that replacing a chassis that usually has a speaker mounted to it one would leave the old speaker in place and the PN of the 38-12 speaker assembly is different, but I could not find a Transitone sch and so I did not know if the speaker was PM or FC type. Hence the question.

I certainly do not want to replace a voice coil filtering. After all, not only I end up with a big resistor I have to solder and secure somewhere, but the voice coil is better at it anyway as it is an inductor and so it is LC + RC filtering which is cleaner.

Thanks again. Pity, for 20 bucks it'd be a good buy. Somehow those 38/39 small radios in not so good shape sell for more than I can justify buying for parts. I missed one - forgot about it, and it sold for a reasonable amount a month ago.
I still have not given up hope of getting the proper speaker for my 38-15.

You really need to make a trip out to one of the regional swap meets, that is where you find junker sets and parts chassis with what you need. In my experience ebay is largely a waste of time for trying to buy a parts set, too many people can't seem to tell a junker apart from a viable restoration project if it's still in it's cabinet. I lucked out last fall with a RCA parts chassis for my C.G.E model E-81, it was a chassis from a parted out seven tube RCA console model that not many are looking for. You may have better luck searching for a chassis rather then a whole set, small sets tend to bring higher then average prices on fleabay in the same way that consoles bring lower then average prices.

Do you know of any that happens soon?

Well, the New Jersey club is having a swap meet on April 20:

Plus, there's Kutztown (from what I have heard, this is a HUGE meet) coming up on May 10-11:

Thanks Ron

Should go there. Actually I've been thinking to join the NJARC. Keep forgetting to go there and join.
