Thanks Jerry I think I've got a guy thats about 20 miles from me that has 40 years experience in fixing radios who will take care of this for me. He seems pretty honest and skilled. I am going to stick to trying to fix easier radios for quite awhile until I figure this thing out hopefully someday!! In the mean time I have really appreciated all the tips and help Im finding here.

The Illinois Antique Radio Club, ARCI, holds is bi-monthly swap meets in Carol Stream quite close to you - there are usually lots of simple radios to be had that you could cut your teeth on . Unfortunately you just missed them so the next mtg is December 8th. You might also want to think about a signal generator which you could get from the same place for not much $. That will help you with most radios you work on and is great for hunting down problems such as you have.
