Question on replacing the selenium rectifier in my tube checker
#1

Hey gang, I have a heathkit TC-2 tube checker. I have replaced the caps and some off spec resistors. It has a selenium rectifier which id like to replace, its on the secondary of the Xfmr. My question is must I use a resistor in series with a new diode? I have hooked it up with test leads (1N5401) and it works OK without any resistance added, I am able to zero the meter and have some left on the trim pot. If I add a 100ohm i need to turn the pot full on to get the meter up to zero position.
I replaced one of these on my VTVM and had to use a resistor to drop the voltage but it was on the primary.....not sure what to do here....
The schematic shows a silicon diode symbol. Any ideas?

My guess is, no you do not absolutely have to.

well, I put it in and all my readings are higher than used to be. I may just well nedd to add a small bit of resistance but im gonna leave it alone for now.

I think you are OK, incoming line voltage is a bit higher now. Could add a fuse or little fusister if you want.
