Philco 84B variants?
#1

Hi,

I have a photo of the Philco 84B late model posted on my website:- http://www.tuberadioland.com/philco84b_late.html

A few months ago I received an e-mail from another collector who suggested that both the grille cloth and dial-face on my model were incorrect. He said that both items on my set were actually those of the early model 84B http://www.tuberadioland.com/philco84B-early.html

At the time I checked with the Radioattic archives http://radioatticarchives.com/radio.php?radio=7090 and on the Philcoradio.com Gallery http://www.philcoradio.com/gallery/1935c.htm#p and noted that the latter dial agrees with mine, but the former does not (the grille cloth on philcoradio.com's version is not a valid Philco cloth).

This past weekend I was at the Kutztown show and there were several 84Bs there, both early and late. Judging by what I saw, the late 84B appears to have come with either version of the dial. However I could form no concensus on the grille cloth, as the many sets appeared to have had their cloths replaced.

I'm looking for other inputs into this, as I've not seen the matter discussed previously. Perhaps the late 84B started off having the same cloth and dial as the early model, but transitioned to the updated style as production progressed?

I just looked at Bulletin 216, which gives cabinet replacement parts for 1934-35 models and pictures most of them.

The 2nd version 84B in this Bulletin appears to use 70/90 cloth and the same dial scale as the 1st version 84B.

As this 2nd version 84B cabinet was carried over into the first half of the 1936 model year, it probably did receive a different dial scale at some point in its production. I seem to recall seeing that different dial on some 2nd version 84B sets.

Edit: Yeah, I am always open to better photos for my Gallery...anytime anyone wished to submit one or more. Icon_smile True, the 2nd version 84B in my site's Gallery does not have the correct cloth, but the coloring on the cabinet is correct.

Hi,

Many thanks for your comments Ron. It's interesting that your Bulletin appears to show the 70/90 cloth, as I did see a late 84B with the early dial and that cloth this weekened at Kutztown - I just assumed the cloth was a replacement. Mine originally came with what looked like an original cloth, similar to that of the early 84B, which is what I therefore used (several years back) as a replacement without giving the matter a second thought.

At this point I'll leave the dial and cloth on my late 84B alone but I'll certainly look out for more examples of this model to see what cloth and dial they use.

Thanks again,
Paul
