Philco 50 (early version)
#31

Anyone have a better scan of the label that goes on the Sprague electrolytics can?  I did a little photoshop on this one but the scan is still off center a bit.  When you print it and put it on a can it actually doesn't look so bad since its curved anyway but thought I'd check...and this one will be available until a better one comes along.

Thanks for this great restoration thread Bob. I just started on a Philco 50 and your detailed restoration is a great help!

Do you know the pin-outs for the bypass capacitor block (No. 15 - Part No. 03459)? The schematics I've seen (service bulletin #86, Riders, Beitman's) list values but don't label the block or the schematic.  Icon_rolleyes

I'll post some pictures from mine soon too.

Ah ha - fortunately the 'Internet Way Back' has a reference to the annotated schematic. Icon_smile

So that helps!

Great find! The cap block just had wires coming out of it as labeled on the wayback post. http://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthread...#pid111946

Hey Bob,
I have a phlico 50 that someone has tried to do a restoration.  Icon_mad  Wrong Caps & some missing, especially from the #15 Cap Can. There is no can now, which complicates things & tracing the schematic some of those caps are missing.  Icon_crazy   I know the values for the caps that were in the can.
What I would like to find out is, have you marked a schematic to show which values go to the #15 caps on the schematic?
Thanks so very much for the Help

Jason, I think this will answer your question. Ron has a number of marked up early schematics in the Tech Section.

Woohoo! Thank you so much Bob. I didn't think to check in the tech section. I am so very grateful to you for pointing me in the right direction.  Icon_biggrin
Now maybe this 50 will actually work with right caps, in the right places.   Icon_thumbup
Thanks Again!

Thank you so much. Your method (dare I say ‘trick’?) for opening up the sealed condensers was very appreciated!

My model is a Canadian 50a for the older electrical grid.

ANy thoughts on converting to the current 60hz grid?

Thank you

If by old 50 Hz at 120 volts the set will be happy with 60 Hz as is. If by old 50 Hz at 230 volts then the use of a transformer to step 120 up to 230-240 will do the trick. Can be installed in set if there is room or placed in a electrical box and the set plugged into the box. Just make sure if using the electrical box set up to change the plug to something used on 240 volt equipment.  David
