Philco 643 color scheme and modification
#31

Come and do the wood floors at my house....

Nice job! Can't wait to see it done.

Thanks guys! Sorry, I don't do floors Icon_wink

I masked off the center and sprayed on some Mohawk extra dark walnut (M101-0209).

I did about 6 light passes and tried to vary my angle to get in all the nooks and crannies.

You may have noticed that I did plug the hole in the side.

I let the toner cure for a couple hours and carefully removed the painters tape.

Next up, I'll remove some tape residue with mineral spirits and apply a new Philco decal.

Lovely wood grain on the front panel. Lucky dog!!!!!

Yep, that's purty. Now, please don't ruin your work with a Radio Daze PH3, PH7 or PH9 decal!

Their PH8 is a fair substitute for the original, but still does not look quite right.

It looks like if you order the PH-HiFi decal sheet and cut off the block letter "HIGH FIDELITY" from under the PHILCO name, that you will have an authentic-looking decal.

Yeah, I figured you'd say something like that. All I have on hand is a sheet of PH3 Icon_sad
#38

I just remembered I needed to order a set of Motorla VT71 decals from radiodaze anyway. I'll add that PH-HiFi to my order.
#39

The decals just arrived. I see what you mean. Once I trim "HIGH FIDELITY" off, the ones on the right will be a good match.

Yes. The "PHILCO" name on the right is the correct font for 1932-36 Philco models, and was also used on some 1937 models. Only the originals were more of a copper color rather than gold, but at least the font is correct on these.

You folks may get tired of my complaining about the RD Philco decals. The way I look at it is like this: We owe it to future generations to get the details right in the reproductions we make, else we shouldn't do them at all. That's one man's opinion.

I agree completely, if you are going to pay the price for a reproduction it should at least be an accurate reproduction, and that includes the reproduction dials. I'm getting a little tired of the same lame excuses over a small market and limited profit potential over what amounts to a few hours time (like the decals for example), the old car guys reproduce parts all the time and they won't rest until they get it right, it's their passion for the hobby that drives them. If they made these items without issue 50, 60, 70, and even 80 years ago with limited technology, no computers, and chemical know how why can't they make them the right way now? Maybe we should start up a new restoration supply company for Philco parts?
Regards
Arran

P.S Sorry to get off topic on Bob's thread but he also seems like the sort that wants to do things right.
