49-1601 loud hum
#1

I have a model 49-1601 radio/phonograph that originally belonged to my Father's aunt and has sat unused for a long time. When you turn it on all you get is a very loud hum. On the back there is a toggle switch that doesn't look original (probably installed by my father). When you turn the toggle switch off the hum stops but there's no volume. Unfortunately my Father is not around to ask him what the switch is for. I am a complete newbie when it comes to tube electronics so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome,
Go here: https://philcoradio.com/library/download...8-1949.pdf and click on your on your model  number. This the Philco service info for it. More than likely the hum issues is caused by C-101 and C-102. All section should be replaced for starters. There are a number of foil/paper capacitors that should be replaced also.

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.
Circa 1966
Now I think I've got!
