Philco 60
#1

Hello, Im a rookie at this.I looked over the chassis and fixed a couple of connections. The tone control is cooked, it has .01uf and .015uf in the switch. Can I replace it with a .01uf 400 volts and a .022uf 400 volts? Also the speaker cone is in bad shape. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Ralph

Hi and welcome,

You can but I would up the voltage rating to 630v. The .022 will make it sound a bit more muffled than the .015. As for the speaker you send it down to Sound Remedy in NJ. They can fix you up for a reasonable price. Or You can diy it if you can get the proper cone and center it.

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.
Circa 1966
Now I think I've got!

Hi Ralph, welcome. Terry is right about the .022 making the sound muffled. They are bypassing higher frequencies from the output transformer. But it depends on the speaker among other factors. I would use two .01 caps instead and definitely 630 volts.

Thank you for the welcome and information. Im sure I will have more questions as they arise.

Another question, the only cap I can get locally today is .01uf and 1000v. Would that work? Or should I be patient and order the correct ones?

Yes, The higher voltage is always OK.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
