Philco 116X
#1

I ended up in Canton, OH at about 10pm thursday evening after finding this radio advertised on craigslist at 9pm. I at first thought it was a 37-116, but it turns out I found a complete model 116X instead. The guy claimed to have been using it for a while, but the last time he went to use it there was smoke from around the transformer. So, I will possibly be looking for another transformer for this unit when work starts on it in the future. This is a big console and looks like a monolith sitting beside my other Philco floor radios right now! It might be interesting to try and score both a 37-116 and a 38-116 now so I have the whole evolution of this style of Philco. Each one has enough changes and improvements to warrant having one of each.

Those 1936 Model 116X radios are great sets. The 116B tombstone models with 42 outputs are quite loud...the console versions with 6A3s are even louder.

Congratulations on your acquisition! Icon_biggrin

Hi,
Well a 39-116 just went up on epay. It's a beautiful set awaiting complete restore. Bidding starts at only $150!!
Too rich for my thin blood. But, I'll watch it out of curiousity to see what it goes for!

I just took the guts for the 116x up to be worked on today when I picked up the guts for my 111. Sadly, the power transformer is fried, so that will have to be replaced. Lots of capacitors in there as well! I'd better save up for the repair job bill on this one. I have a friend near Dayton who is big on Zenith radios that also has a working 116X and he loves it. That is a good sign coming from a Zenith collector if they really like the 116X! I will love to see how this beast makes things rattle. Icon_biggrin

As Ron stated, great sets! I have several 116B sets, and a 116X set(waiting on that elusive 680 set). My 116X works ok, needs a resto and alignment. I'll get around to that after my 37-116X resto is complete.

I'll tell you what, the 116X is a good performer and the best shortwave console I have had to date. It makes me want a 116B for in the regular house so I can also shortwave listen. Looking for that will have to wait though, I just blew some change on a BIG RCA model 140 tombstone. Icon_redface With the performance of this radio, I can only imagine how a 37-116 or even a 38-116 performs! It seems Philco improved with each model year until the 40's.

No matter where you go, there you are.
