Rich:
What about that remote jack/switch? I don't think that it's the problem but those sort of jacks often cause problems when used as earphone jacks in transistor radios. Did this motor function before you started the restoration work?

Hello Arran,
First of all, when I tried it, the tape player didn’t work and the radio barely worked because the main 2200µF capacitor from the AC power supply was bad. The radio worked a bit, but the AM/FM switch and record mode switch were dirty, and I want to clean the remote J2 and S2-3, S2-4 better since they all look tarnished. One test I did today was hooking a bench power supply to the DC power jack, and the unit worked. I’ll try it on battery next, but I still need to finish installing the new battery springs, as the old ones were rusty and corroded.

Also I lubricated the motor with some of my fine zoom turbine oil and ran the motor off the bench supply with no belt for like 10 minutes ran fine.

Hello Guys,
I finished installing the new battery springs and tested the radio and tape player, and they worked perfectly. Later, something strange happened—the tape motor would only run when in radio mode. So, I removed the tape/radio switch, which is a slide switch without a spring or ball detent, and desoldered it from the board.

I’m wondering if I should take it apart or put it in my ultrasonic cleaner, but I’m worried that might mess it up since I don’t want to damage it.

Try some DeOxIt D5 cleaner. I am usually successful disassembling and cleaning switches. However, it looks like:
Someone did this already
Soldering to the PC board is part of the structure of the switch.

Hello mr Fixxr,
I pulled the switch out on Sunday, and before doing so, I had applied DeOxit. Looking through the open ends, I noticed the bottom contacts are still heavily tarnished, which is why I’m considering either putting it in my ultrasonic cleaner or taking it apart to hand clean it.

Hello guys,
Good news! I took that selector switch apart and used my fiberglass pen to clean it. Wow, was that thing blackened! Then I put it back together and applied some D-Oxit to keep it lubricated. The last thing I need to do is clean the tone control.

Sincerely Richard
