42-355 no radio
#1

Just finished a recap on a 42-355 and I have No radio. Not sure if the radio worked before but what can I check to see where the issue is ?

Hi,
There's a long list.
1. Check all transformers and coils for continuity. If any are open then the radio won't run. Be sure the speaker field coil is OK and it needs to be connected for B+ to get distributed.
2. Test for B+ voltages at the power supply and plate/screen grid circuits of each tube.
3. Check audio circuits by touching the cent3r terminal of the volume control with a screwdriver. If you don't hear a hum then there is probably a fault in the audio circuit. If you hear a hum then there is a problem with the rf circuit.

Thank you I will Check those listed in the morning

I would start with the audio output transformer, if it's the Philco original there is a better then even chance that it has an open primary, early 40s Philcos were bad for this.

The good news is I do get a hum on the audio output. I did also test the xxl tubes and they are weak. I ordered some new ones so maybe that will help

Hello Philco4me,
Great news hope those tubes do the trick!

I tried to put a working radio along side the philco. Strange thing is I had Both radios tuned to the same station or close to it but when I would move the dial on the philco the signal would fade on the working radio. Is that the way it should work?
