Philco Tropic Model 42-760T
#16

Unfortunately I do not have another 1942 Tropic of this type with a back to use as a pattern for this one. I might use my 53-960's back as a pattern; the 53-960's back is taller and a bit wider, though.

The set probably looks better in the photos than it really is. There is some missing veneer just along the back edge of the top. The entire cabinet will have to be refinished. The chassis will need extensive work as well.

I've stripped the cabinet:

I have one of these in very good physical condition.

Welcome, Kathleen! Can you tell us more about your 42-760? Any photos?

I just noticed that I posted the "stripped" photo of my 42-761 nearly three months ago, and since then the only thing I have done to it is to glue one area that was coming loose, and to completely sand it down in preparation for grain fill. This summer has not been as ambitious for me as last summer was as far as refinishing cabinets goes, mainly due to the heat wave.

Actually, it is probably a 42-788T. Do you know anything about that model? .....Including, generally, a range of how much it might be worth in very good physical condition. ....Probably needs tube relacements.

I don't have a picture of our set, as it is at my Brother's house. They are currently out of town, so I can't verify that it is a '41 or '42 or get a
picture right now.

Kathleen, sorry for not replying sooner...I got busy and forgot about this thread. Icon_redface

I have a photo, and some info, on the 42-788 here:

http://www.philcoradio.com/gallery/1942a.htm#ah

Very similar to the previous model year's 41-788, only the 42-788 added an extra band on the left side dial making four bands on the left and five on the right.

The 41-788 had three bands on the left and five on the right:

Hope this helps.
