Phorum How-To #9: Messaging and Notification
#1

In this lesson we are going to look at the Messaging and Notification section of the User Control Panel's Edit Options page.

You can change how - or if - you receive emails from the Phorum and/or the Administrators/Moderators as follows:

Go to your User CP, then click or tap the Edit Options link.

When the Edit Options screen comes up, take a look at the box labeled "Messaging and Notification."

If you don't want to receive emails from administrators, uncheck (tap to clear the checkbox) the box labeled "Receive emails from the Administrators." (NOTE: It is strongly suggested that you leave this box checked, or else you might miss out on an important message. Members of Phorum management do not send out mass emails, or even emails to individual members, unless absolutely necessary.)

If you do not want other members to be able to send you emails, check (tap) the box labeled "Hide your email from other members." But if you want to receive emails from other members, make sure this box is checked.

Other members will still be able to send you private messages (PMs), in either case...unless...

...you uncheck (tap to clear the checkbox) the box next to "Receive private messages from other users." Again, it is suggested that you leave this one checked to enable PMs.

The next checkbox, "Only receive private messages from users on my Buddy List. This setting has no effect unless there is at least one buddy on the list", is entirely up to you as to whether you wish to enable or disable. If you are using the buddy system, checking or tapping this box will only permit you to receive PMs from users who are on your Buddy List. Unchecking this box allows you to receive PMs from any Phorum member. I strongly suggest that you leave this box unchecked.

If you have the next checkbox checked - "Alert me with a notice when I receive a Private Message" - you will receive a notice by way of a banner under the picture at the top of the Phorum home page when you log on to the Phorum. If you uncheck this box, you will not see a banner notifying you of a new PM when you log on.

If you want to know when you receive a PM from a Phorum member, make sure the checkbox labeled "Notify me by email when I receive a new Private Message" is checked.

"Receive PM notifications for new buddy requests" allows you to receive notifications via PM when you have a new buddy request. Unchecking this box will prevent you from receiving such notices via PM.

There is one more checkbox, which should be self-explanatory - "Automatically accept buddy requests (if the above checkbox is ticked, a PM is sent informing of the new buddy connection)." If this box is unchecked as shown above, you will have to approve any buddy requests that you receive.

Default Thread Subscription Mode

By default, when you post a message in a thread, you are subscribed to that thread and you will receive emails notifying you when a new post is made to that thread. You can change this behavior by choosing another option in the drop-down box: No email notification means you will not receive emails when someone else posts in the thread you have posted in; Do not subscribe prevents you from subscribing to a thread you post in.

Again, the default is Instant email notification.

When you are finished making changes, click or tap the Update Options button at the bottom of the page, or else your changes will not be saved.
