Proud new owner of a 37-690
#46

Yes, it uses common Philco knobs so that was no problem Icon_smile Other than clear coating the top, I haven't touched the cabinet and don't plan to any time soon. I just don't have the room or equipment to do it right. Someday I hope to get an HVLP spray rig and space to handle a cabinet this large - or have someone else do it.

Yes the top clear finish on the 37 and 38-690's seem to have problems with peeling off. I've seen several that are missing some or most of the lacquer clear coat  Icon_sad

Nice set Bob.  Look forward to one of your great video restorations on this one!

As some of you may know I recently bought a new house and just finished moving. A lot of my collection is now in a climate controlled storage facility, but some of the best are now in a display room. That includes this 37-690.

I moved all the sets either myself or with the help of a friend. I removed some of the chassis to lighten the load which gave me the opportunity to finally take a closer look inside this beast.

Turned out the removing the lower chassis didn't help as much as we had hoped but taking out the big speaker too sure did.

While disconnecting the tweeters I noted that they both were nuts and showed evidence of having been removed. Also the cable for the one in the upper right butts up next to a tube shield.

Well that got me thinking and I did a little web searching and discovered ever example I could find showed the tweeters with the connections up top - not at the bottom. That leads me to the conclusion that mine are in upside-down!

Here's one I found online.

Now here's a look at that lower chassis.

It appears some of the electrolytics were replaced way back in the day. Otherwise, I think it's all original.

Those Sprague electrolytic capacitors would still be "period correct"; if it were mine, I would restuff them.
