Philco 80
#1

I would like to hear from someone who has made a front panel for a Philco 80 (Jr.) cabinet. I need some advice and tips for making one. I don't know if I should just make a plain front and stain it all one color or try to make veneer panels to glue on the front. Also, the speaker cone is completely missing. Electronic Express sells speaker cones but I am not sure any of them will fit. Anyone have experience with replacing one? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I assume your 80 is like this one. http://radio.macinmind.com/gallery/main....alNumber=3

I would find a nice piece of walnut; solid or plywood veneer. Use walnut toned lacquer and mask the light area. Spray a couple of coats then remove the masking and spray a couple more coats. The shallow groove can be done with a router but a pattern will have to be made for the bit to follow.

I have made a front for a Philco 640 and a 38-60 but neither had any grooving so I am just 'thinking on paper' in that regard. It is a bigger project than one might think. I spent many days on the project. The reward, though, is the satisfaction and pride of doing it yourself.

Kind regards,
Terry
