I Think I'm Done
#1

buying radios. I have a ton of these sitting here and have pretty much acquired all the ones I wanted and then some.

Just got a late 1935 16B off the bay. Whilst perusing CL ads, I hit upon an antique shop in Concord, NH that advertised old radios. After a week or so I decided to call yesterday and asked if they had any tube radios. He puts me on hold while he goes to look, comes back on and says "I have a Philco 16B tombstone and a Philco chairside." Well I about fell out of my chair, then I thought I don't believe I just bought one and now here is another one right in my back yard so to speak.

Needless to say I got in the car today and drove to Concord. Sure enough that's what he had. The chairside is a 38-7. There was also a nice turn of the last century German westminster chime clock. So he calls the dealer and gets the absolute best price....which I didn't think was the absolute best price for me. Looked the radios over again and pointed out there was some delamination on the RH side of the 16B case, a crack on the top and I thought there was a piece missing from the dial.
So I made an offer. He called the seller back and my offer was accepted.

Now the minus side to this is not having been in Concord for quite a number of years, and seeing as we have no parking meters in Claremont, I didn't give it a second thought when I parked and saw no meters. However, they DO have metered parking........it's just not what I readily recognized. There is a post that says "pay here" not "metered parking pay here" not "parking pay here" just "pay here". So I got a $10 parking ticket for not "paying here". Did tell the shop owner that maybe if someone from out of town rolls in like I did after calling maybe they should mention there is "pay here" parking. Also told the lady at the police station as well.

Anyway here are the pics of my latest acquisitions. OH, and the only other two radios left to get are my 38-116 and my 38-690 which I am in the process of making arrangements for. Then I need to start in working on all of these.

P.S. check out the packing this lady did on the 16B chassis!! Shipped the set in three boxes and is the absolute finest packing I have ever seen!

I keep telling myself that I'm done buying radios, but then I find myself still picking up one here, one there...going to Louisville soon to pick up a rough but restorable 37C, in fact.

I started the process of thinning the herd somewhat last year. As swap meet season gets going in the Spring, I'll be taking some more sets out of here and hoping to find new homes for them. I will probably offer a few here on the Phorum as well, although I don't really want to ship anything if I can avoid it.

I keep telling myself that as well, even keep trying to thin the herd. Then what do I do? I see one and go after it! I think we all need help. Icon_smile

No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm not done buying radios but there are several I need to get rid of for different reasons. Some are too common, not old enough, wrong brand, duplicates, not interesting enough. There are at least a couple of floor models that have to go, but they need to play before I try selling them.

Well, Arran, just sell me that 1940 Tropic you have and that will help you reduce your load of sets by one... Icon_wink And then I'll find something here to let go of to make room for it. Icon_biggrin

Don't stop, just slow down. I spend a less time at the bench and more time at the terminal anymore.

You have both versions of the 16B non shouldered tombstone! Nice!!!

These are great sets!

I don't think I'll ever be done. You might want to limit your collection to a period (time) as I have done, well , almost. Or to a brand - Philco(?), which I haven't done. Like may others here I sell a comon model to make room for a new high tube or rare new find.

I just keep building shelves and figuring out better ways to display.
I really like restoring the electronics, and this may sound odd, but, these are platforms to display my tubes. The cabinets, I just do, since I am too (put your word here) to allow anyone else to do it.

One of these days I can post a view of the museum, though you have seen parts of it already.

I would like to electrically that 40-780 Tropic electrically just to find out how well it performs. That's generally why I acquire most of the things I have is just to see how well they perform. That Tropic is a beast though, picture a large console radio with the bottom cut off. That's sort of my thing is large table radios with a chassis fit for a console, a 16B or 116B would fit that category as well.

TA,
Yeah, that kind of surprised me to get both of these within a week. But I am certainly not complaining!!
