Model 71 Grill Cloth: original or not?
#1

I'm in the process of restoring my father-in-law's Model 71 cathedral with the help of some friends. While discussing how to mount a new speaker in the cabinet, one of them pointed out that he didn't think that the grill cloth that was in the radio was original. I'd thought it was, but now I'm not sure. So, figured I'd ask the experts! What do you think?

If it's not original, what should it look like? Not entirely sure I'm gonna bother replacing it if it's not as what I have looks salvagable.

Can you take a close up picture of the cloth? The weave pattern is not visible in the photo.

If the existing speaker's field coil and output transformer are still good, you might consider having it reconed. The field coil is part of the power supply and replacing with a PM speaker involves complications. Alternately, you could try and find a similar used speaker.

This is what a reproduction of the original cloth looks like.

Not an exact duplicate, but the best available at this time:

Unfortunately, that's the only picture I have of the cloth and it's currently at my buddy's house, so I can't take another right now.

The field coil on the speaker is shot. Coupled that with the obvious problems with the cone and I elected to use another that one of my friend's had. It's the same size, but the screw holes don't line up with the cabinet. We'll have to work something out to get it mounted.

The image of the grill cloth you posted isn't viewable. Can you repost it?

Strange, I can see Mondales grill cloth pic.

I think this is original:

I'm seeing the graphic now. Must have been a browser problem.

Thanks for posting the picture, Phlogiston! Definitely doesn't look like my cloth is original. Have to decide if I want to replace it or not.
