no more photo finish
#1

[attachment=6245]                    Not factory , but I like it . Buying these radios that the photofinish is all roached out is ok. Nobody wants them in that state, and does not want to fool with them. If I really want that model factory finish .Go buy one in good condition

So, you veneered it yourself? It doesn't look like the original wood from under the photofinish.

Hey, Nice job Fred ! What veneer did you use ? 2 ply or paper back ? Also, what vendor did you get it from ? I'm looking for 2 small bookend pieces. I've always been told 2 ply is the way to go, I've had problems with the lacquer, breaking down the paper backed adhesive, even with a few good seal coats of shellac.
Those plain wood philco's sure are ugly without a nice veneer on them, the added bonus is you can pick them up cheap.
Good Work !

Yes I veneered it and that is original wood under the roached out photo finish. The wood they used is a cheap white wood , not any nice grain to speak of, photo finish was used over the cheap wood. You can stain it  but it doesn't look to good, or you can photo finish it again , which is not my cup of tea.

Thanks for the complement Tony, that is( WOW) veneer, in walnut. The place I buy it is called wood world in dallas. The reason they call it wow because its (wood on wood) , no paper back, I don't use that paper back because of what you said, Lacquer base products will desolve the paper back glue and then the nightmare begins. im lucky that there are a few places around here that sell all kinds of veneer. PS the bottom strip is a wood inlay with walnut burl 1 1/2 "
