60MB cabinet needs some love
#1

Here's the 60MB cabinet that goes with the chassis from the earlier electronic restoration thread.  At first seemed to be in reasonable shape...you know, the usual dirty, a few dings and scratches with some paint splats on the top but as I looked closer there was lots of veneer that was just about ready to fall off on the grill area, along some of the edges and portions of the old plywood were separating.  Some gluing was needed to stabilize things before further cleaning and stripping.

Here's a closer view of the surface before stripping.  Then, since its still a bit cold to be outside stripping with lacquer thinner, I used Citristrip followed by a wipedown with lacquer thinner to get the last residue off.  One last sliver of veneer to glue down  Icon_smile

Looks great so far. That's exactly the point when a cabinet becomes "ours". All repaired and stripped etc. Ill bet that front veneer looks good when you wipe it down with paint thinner..fun to get a tease like that cause it hints at what it will look like once grainfilled and clearcoated.

Wanna try your hand on this one? Icon_lol

The guy who told me about the 69 radios really wants it so I said ok but sheesh, the colors!

Looking good!

thanks Jim, yep I wiped it down and it looks nice. Uhhh...Kirk....gee....thanks...no.
Actually, it will probably clean up well unless they did something nasty to the veneer first.

There is always the chance of that with some cabinets, I've had that happen once with one of my Canadian G.E KL500s, but mostly it's just a slacker's way of covering up a failing lacquer finish or "freshening" up the look.

With the warmer weather its been time to work on this cabinet again.  Did some grain filling using Timbermate (walnut color).  Its water soluble, so easy to mix up a slurry and spread it on, scrape it off and then lightly sand.

Toned the cabinet with Mohawk medium brown walnut ultra classic and the trim with black lacquer.  Unfortunately when I pulled some of the tape up after the black lacquer application some of the veneer came up.  Fortunately I was able to glue it back down without too much difficulty.

I think I've got the final gloss lacquer layer down now and will paint the edges of the grill cutouts with a flat black acrylic.  The sunlight gives it a little more red color than what you see indoors.  Final sand and rub out in a few weeks.

Nice one!

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
