Film caps in place of electrolytics.
#1

Been reading on some restore threads where the electrolytic can is being restuffed with a solen fast cap? Are they electrolytic or plain film?
#2

They are film caps.

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.
Circa 1966
Now I think I've got!

So what is the deal of using them over traditional electrolytics?
#4

The electrolytic capacitor is officially a limited lifetime part.
The film capacitor is unlimited lifetime part. Also self-healing. Also has much better ripple/ESR characteristics.
So where it fits (they are large: the electrolytic claim to fame is large capacitance density) it is a good idea to put it in instead.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

On my 16X, I had to put something where the Mershon electrolytics would have been. Two film type metal cased motor caps were fixed using a home made strap in a configuration close to the original, with paper insulation around the cans.

I have since obtained a set of original caps which could be restuffed and fitted to the chassis. I may get to this, but am happy with the look, performance and hopefully long life of the film caps

I don't hold with furniture that talks.
