[split] Philco 20 Restoration
#1

Steve:

I restored a Philco 20, replacing all caps and resistors, addingY2 safety caps.
the radio fires up with plenty of volume, but I can only hear a couple of stations.  If I physically touch the grid cap on the first 24 tube, all the stations come in.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe

Welcome to the Phorum. Icon_wave

I split your thread off so you can have your own set of questions and answers on the Philco 20 restore. Sometimes folks get confused when there are two different sets being discussed in one thread.

Did you add a 10 or 20 foot length of wire as the antenna? Did you check the continuity of the antenna coil?

Resolder the grid caps on the #24As, especially if the test weak, and also resolder, or replace the grid cap leads, that is a weak point in any radio with grid capped tubes.

I re-soldered all the grid cap wires.   Still, the S/N ratio improves greatly when i physically touch the grid cap on the first 24 tube.

Same if I touch the variable on the first (front) of the tuning cap.

ANy further thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

1. Check all your coils.
2. Align, align, align.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
