Model 66b Low Volume
#1

Replaced 3 electrolytic caps, 6 paper caps and 6 resistors. All tubes test good. Followed the Rider’s alignment instructions. Volume is weak using an 8 ft antenna wire. Touching a screwdriver to the top of the 6A7 tube, 1st detector oscillator, causes a significant increase in volume on the AM band (not on the SW band.) Any suggestions for increasing the volume?

Sounds like a bad antenna coil to me. It will probably have to be rewound.

Do you have a multimeter? Check the continuity of that coil.

I removed the antenna coil and did not see any green oxidation. I have since reinstalled the antenna coil. The coil seemed to have 4 different sets of windings and 6 terminal posts including the attaching bracket. However, I’m not sure which terminals to check for continuity. Also, the Riders schematic info I have does not give resistance values for the coils.

I noticed that when turning the radio on when cold, the volume was low. After a couple of minutes, the radio made a pop sound and then the volume was louder. I’ve noticed these pop sounds before and they seem to be associated with changes in volume?
