40-165 vs 41-260
#1

Today I was reading the classifieds in our local paper to find a Philco console radio for sale for $100. Curious, I called on the radio and inquired as to what model it was. The seller checked and said it is a 41-260 that is in good shape and working. Guess his wife got it and is now not in love with it anymore. Anyways, I wasn't sure I wanted it because I have a nice 40-165 that works well and really both look to be the same radio except that the cabinet on the 41-260 might be a bit different and it appears to be a 7 tube chassis. Was one radio better than the other or is the performance the same?

Hi Jayce
The sets are pretty similar but the '165 has a rf amp before the mixer, but the '260 has no rf amp but two IF amps
So the '165 should pickup more stations (has more front end gain) but can't separate them apart where the '260 should be able to separate them better (better selectivity because of more IF gain).
Audio looks to be the same. I'd say it's a toss up.

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.

Now I think I've got!

Ok. Thanks for helping me sort that out. My little 40-165 is actually great at receiving stations and is sometimes the only radio in my collection that can sort our local station out of the background noise at night when they turn the power down. I did take down the info on the 41-260 and figure I can pass the info on if anything else. It's hard to sell old radios around here, so I wish the guy luck.

No matter where you go, there you are.
