Philco 97
#1

Have started the resto. Cabinet solid, finish shot. Speaker cone needed repair. Knobs, escutchion should respond to being cleaned and polished. Chassis appears to have a replacement power transformer and replacement on/off control. Also has a phones jack installed directly below the electrolytics. Note the number "97" on the back of the tuning condenser.

So far have replaced the 8mFd and 12mFd electrolytics, the 1,2,2 mFd electrolytic mounted under the chassis, the 0.001mFd between both plates of the 42 pp output, and the power cord. Tubes were tested, 6A7 was bad, 85 was bad, and one of the 78s was dead!! Both 42s were good and very close to the same reading!

When powered up, the radio works. However, the sound quality deteriorates after the radio has been on for a few minutes. I switched it off, let it cool off, and turned it on again. Same thing, sounds good, then starts to deteriorate after a few minutes.

Plan to start the cabinet tomorrow.

That's a great find, Tom, and good luck with the restoration!
