Help Please! 38-116 Troubles
#16

Do I need a signal generator or will a signal tracer do what I need to do?

There is an old signal generator on Ebay that supposedly works looks like $70 will probably get it. I know nothing about this stuff yet, does that sem like a good deal?

No a tracer won't do what you will need. Zeek!$70 I'd pass on that!!
Here's a few:

Something like this will work fine. I use a SG-8 my dad built back in '58. The SG-6 is kinda kewl as it would match my other older HK test equipment.

I have NO financial interest in any of the above.

I forgot to mention to make sure you have the Magnetic Tuning off when working on this beast

I was down in the basement in my dad's

figure out what all those squiggly meant.

Now I think I've got!

I started back working on the radio today and discovered something. I touched the metal can of one of the 6l6's and got zapped. I checked voltage from chassis ground to the tube casing and I had 265 volts, actually both 6l6 cans had 265 volts. That is not normal correct? I disconnected the yellow wire with the green tracer coming from the transformer to the negative side of the electrolytics and it is not shorted to ground. Could this be the reason why the stations sound garbled and weak on the side of the band that is working? Any thoughts on where to start looking for that short?

How's your -25v at pin 5 of the 6L6's?

Pulled the sub chassis this past weekend, replaced 4 resistors, changed some damaged wires and the darn thing plays!!!! I'm about ready to align the tuner, send the speaker in for a re-cone and call it done.

Thanks to all!!!!

Your pin 1 of the 6L6 was used as a tie point for something else. Just about all metal tubes including original 6L6 had their metal shell attached to pin 1. Glass models had nothing attached to this pin. ok?
