Philco Round top radio (38-1139???)
#1

Hello everyone
I have a Philco round top radio. The only number I can find is 38-1139 this number is under the chassis. Is this the model number I cannot find anything about it on the internet. Nostalgia does not have it listed.
It has 0ne 80, one 42, and two 77 tubes. I can get the 470 KC tuned ok but I cannot get a broadcast signal thru. It has a "gimmick" type coupling between the osc and the det and I am not sure if that is working, it was unwound when I started to work on it. The radio seems to be a copy of a Philco 37-84 but the tube lineup is very different. Does anyone have any info on this??

Thanks Joe

My research fits the Philco model 81 ca. 1932-33.

Yep. Sounds like the Model 81. You may also want to look at these two pertinent Service Tips from my site:

You may have an open coil or two -- use your meter to check for continuity of all coils. Early Philcos suffer from green corrosion disease on older coils.

Hey Thanks Guys
With your help I found it. The radio is a Model 84 it is very close to the model 81 but I checked 80,81, and 84. It is a model 84 no doubt
but your help lead me right to it.
Chuck your tips will help me put this jewell back in service.
Many Thanks
Joe
