Philco 42-PT92 .2uf cap with coil
#1

Howdy:
I am restoring a Philco 42-PT92. One of the capacitors is a .2uf with a wire wound 7 times on 1 side that goes to chassis ground. What i like to know is, what the H**l is this? LOL.. Can i replace it with a orange drop .22uf.. Need help on this...

Someone mentioned in a recent thread that this subject comes up quite often, and they were right!

Theory of operation of these special capacitors may be found at Chuck's site:

Now, to answer your question: Generally, yes, you may replace with a modern .22 uF cap and not worry about the coil. But if you have any squealing afterwards, go back in, wind seven turns of 20 or 22 gauge wire around the new cap in the same manner - same direction of winding, same number of turns - as the original winding, and reconnect in the radio.
