Good Philco pwr trans except 1-side HV plate windings
#1

I have a salvaged Philco AC pwr trans (10 wire version) that all cks good except one side of the H.V. plate wires. The H.V.- centertap & 1 good side is reading about 370 volts ac . The other side HV plate windings lead-wire is dead (no high voltage at all). The rectifier low-voltage 5v filament windings, ( and its 1 sided) centertap wire also ck good, as does the 6-volt filament leads. My question is this? I have heard before that using a diode can be used to solve the problem on the one "bad-side" of the Hi voltage secondary. Has anyone here ever used this method to bypass a 1/2 dead Hi volts side of the plate secondary before to continue using the AC trans? Any tips would be appreciated!! Randal (Texasrocker)

Don't use it. Get a replacement.

While the problem may be as simple as a disconnected lead inside, getting to said lead might be difficult if not impossible due to the 110V and filament windings would above the HV winding, which is usually the innermost winding in a power transformer.

If the problem is more serious (i.e. burned out half-winding), you're taking a big chance with continuing to use it. I would replace it and be done.

One man's opinion...that's all...
