40-180 question
#1

Back to tinkering with the 40-180, and was wondering what the purpose of the antenna attached to the top of the cabinet is used for?
Is it necessary to have this hooked up to have it play properly?
This radio has been recapped and it does work and receive stations on all bands, but at a low volume.
Could this be caused be having this antenna disconnected?
Possible problem with the loop? Loop seems to be working ok.
Idea's?

You need that loop for SW reception. Leave it connected.

Working on the chassis on the bench, so it is currently disconnected.
I do get shortwave reception now with the big loop connected as well as broadcast band, just not at very good volume and clarity.
Same amount of volume using the pushbuttons even though they have their own coils.
Sound like a problem in the audio output area?
Have checked all tubes and they are good.
Stumped.

It could also be an alignment issue.

Although this is NOT the recommended method, if you have strong stations in the vicinity of the f where you must align, you can attempt to tweak the respective padders to clarify reception.

Thanks for the replies,
Have tried tweeking the alignment and the padders and this is as loud as she get's.
