Grille cloth for radiobar with 40-165
#1

All, I finally have my 1940 radiobar Zephyr in my shop and I'm starting to plan the restoration.  The radiobar has a 40-165 radio.  The grille cloth is torn but it's not very visible due to the wide grill bars.  Attached is a picture of the cloth that was in the radio. Due to its condition I suspect it's original.  Is this a Philco pattern?    Can anyone recommend a close replacement?  I realize they're not many options at this time.   The photo is a bit weird, the pattern has small gold diamonds.  This is the closest match I've found so far

Thanks in advance.

I used that cloth in a Montgomery Wards Airline console I restored and I think it looked very nice

Another thing to consider is a trip to JoAnn Fabric or another fabric store and see what they have that might be close to your  cloth.  Sometimes you can find a pretty close match.  My 48-482 was one of those.  The original is the small piece with the tear in the middle that sits on top of the Joann Fabric cloth.  Even if it doesn't match there may be something similar enough.

Thanks Bob, Is there anything special about grill cloth?  I go to our local fabric store and see what I can find.

Not really.  It's often very thin cloth although the 48-482 cloth was heavier.  Othe folks may have some thought as well.

Keith, where did you find that grill cloth please? Looks close to what I need.
Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, the photo is of the cloth that I'm looking for and the link is the closest match I've been able to find.  So if you're looking for the cloth in the photo we're in the same boat.

Yes, that is the correct 1940 Philco cloth.  I wish I had better news (I thought I was going to), but That cloth seems to be gone.  AES was still selling that pattern VERY recently which is what makes it so frustrating to be telling you this!  AES had several Radio patterns, but now all they have is amplifier cloth.  I suspect someone bought up their remaining stock and will be reselling it somewhere.  I'd wait a while and see if it doesn't turn up somewhere online soon.  The cloth you found on eBay may be correct.  It's hard to tell from the photo and they may be showing the wrong side.

Ken Richmond also sells off his website Richmondesignsinc, he is the ebayer listed.
