Philco 95 value
#1

Picked up a Philco 95 today.
Had been in the family since new.
Cabinet in exc. condition. No Loose veneer .
Appears that it has had some areas re-finished at some time.
Guy said it worked fine.
Brought it home and hooked it up to variac, and it play beautifully. No hum or static.
Receives signals strong through the whole dial.
Looks like original rayon covered cord to boot.
Bought this to re-sell.
Do not plan on removing the chassis.
Will just clean it up and sell.
What you Philco fans price this one at?

$85-120 where I am.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Something doesn't look right about the finish on the cabinet, for one thing it looks sort of dull, and it should be gloss. For another it doesn't look like there is any toner on the solid wood parts, like the legs, the moldings, and the edges of the cabinet doors. On my model 96 lowboy it also had this fogging effect around the edges of the front panels, and the sides of the cabinet were finished with a dark walnut lacquer. I think that someone stripped your cabinet at some point and refinished it. It's unfortunate that the photo of the model 95 highboy is of such a poor example in terms of getting the shading effect, it looks dirty or like someone smeared oil stain all over it.

Yeah. Here is an original finish from a CL ad. You can see, though yellowed, the trim and legs are darker.

Now the same radio refinished:

Well after looking at his again, I suppose they could have used less toner on the top. Or maybe just the top was refinished. The legs look about right. But the white wood trim to the left and right should have been toned darker on top and bottom leaving a lighter area in the center (vertically).

That is the original finish on the bird's eye front and the inside of the doors. So I matched that level of gloss in the refinish of the rest. It probably had more gloss when new.

I think I gave $90 for this one, which was probably $40 too much as it was in the CL ad.
