RCA 35 X
#1

Hello folks-
Anyway to tell if this set uses metal tubes for the SK SA SQ tubes? Have seen a photo where they are metal, my set has glass and I am having lot of static when tuning. Icon_confused

We are all recapped and such.

Thanks.

Since it is an RCA model I would bet that they were probably all metal, I'm not sure if the GT style versions require shields or not, though it probably won't help with the static much even if you added some. Does the static only come through whilst you are tuning the set? If so there may be a mechanical cause like a bad solder joint or a grounding braid that's rubbing the rotor.

Yes Arran, very likely correct on the metal. I have seen some photos of the chassis and it had the metals. If I have the 3 SKs I may try a swap.

The set plays fine when on a station, the static occurs as you turn the tuing knob and scroll the band, annoying but once you get to a program you are fine. Content played thru the RCA jack sounds super. So I will check more. Thx for the suggestions.

Paul,
Since this set has octals in it I take it that it does not have those mini IF cans with the crappy mica caps does it?

Try the tube sockets pinching correctly on Pin 1 (metal sleeve ground.) Happened a couple of times to me.

It has the large cans, a bit karger than the tubes. Like this....

Tried the metal tubes, I think may be the tuning condenser. Blew out some crud, TV tuner cleaner a shot or 2. See how it plays tomorrow.
