Emerson Model 77 Console Radio
#1
Photo

Hello,
This is my first post and I'm looking for a little help from this forum... oh sorry I mean phorum.

I bought this radio today from a moving sale.  I thought it was really cool and I could clean it up and turn it into a cool piece for a room in our home for display.  But when I got home I did some research on it and found that its actually a pretty rare item... maybe.  I got led to this forum because of a post from a couple of years ago where someone else found one of these.

So I am wondering if I bought a valuable collectable or a cool conversation piece for my house.  (or maybe something I can fix up to work)  I did plug it in and turned it on...  the light comes on the dial but it just buzzes.

Here are some pics:

I hope I did that right...

Thank you all for any help or info on this

Hi Chris, welcome to the Phorum.

Nice looking radio. You have a little work to do to make it safe and reliable . First the filter capacitors will need to be replaced. These are what is causing the hum. There are other capacitors that will need to be replaced also. There is plenty of help available right here on the Phorum. Good luck with your project.

Hi Chris and welcome,
For whatever reason Emerson didn't make many console sets, but did make a bunch of table sets. It's from about 1933-34 as it uses 2.5volt heater tubes. Don't attempt to try it out as you can damage some hard to find/expensive parts. You mention perhaps fixing  it up, more than happy to aid you in your pursuit. I don't know what your skill levels are, like can you solder, use a volt meter, and what is your level of tolerance for being shocked??? (A little tongue and cheek) Here is the service info:

If you are up for the challenge we can put together a little parts list (about  $20-25) worth of replacement part to get your set in order after doing a few checks on some major components.

I tried to edit your photo lines to make the images appear right in the post but was not able to do so.  The format is

[img]yourpictureURL[/img]

with no space between the image tags and the URL but that did not seem to work for your postings.  Not sure why but maybe someone with a flickr account will have a thought.

Nice! Your radio can certainly be made to play again. Sounds like there is life in there. As mentioned, don't power it back up until some things have been gone through to make it safe and protect those hard to find parts inside. There is a lot of knowledge in here and we would be glad to help you through the process. Watch out tho, this can be addictive! Icon_smile
