Electrolytic negative leads
#1

It took five weeks, but I did it!  All 20 paper caps replaced on the 46-1209.  I'm starting to get the hang of this.

Now, the electrolytics.  I decided to restuff the cans, starting with 10 (25 + 10 mfd).

I understand where the two positive leads go.  For the negatives, do I solder them together and that's it, or do they have to be in contact with the can?

Solder them together and connect them to one of the negative terminals of the can which is the connection to the can.
#3

Ah, okay!  To one of these tabs, right?

And I drill through the sawed off "lid" to pass all leads through?

Looks like you have the positive of the 25uf connected to the neg. of the 10uf.
Yes you can drill holes along side the tabs you want to connect to.
#5

Indeed I do. Good catch!
#6

The 25uf is an axial and its negative lead isn't long enough to reach the can's tabs. Can I solder the negative lead to the inside wall of the can? If not, what type/gauge of wire should I use to extend the lead?

Apologies for the simplicity of the questions (there *will* be more).
#7

Since the can is probably aluminum you will have a difficult time soldering the wire to the can. Extend the negative lead with a 22 gauge wire and run it to the negative terminal.

Thank you, RodB! Done. Now, on to my next first: the infamous Bakelite block!
