80 rectifier sideways?
#1

Hello all, I need to do some voltage testing on my 60, and I read somewhere that the 80 tube must be upright when the radio is on. Is this true? How is one supposed to check voltages if you can’t turn the radio on its side?

I'll bet you read that on the internet. ;-)

In normal operation, the 80 tube should be right side up. For a brief test, you may temporarily lay the chassis on its side. Just don't operate the set for hours in that position or there is a very real possibility of the filament sagging and touching the plate. The result? KA-BOOM! Shorted tube and burned out power transformer.

Ron thank you!

I think that the tube manuals suggest that you can operate a directly heated rectifier tube if it is oriented in a certain position, of course you could also check the voltages with the chassis upside down.

Okay thank you! I’m in the process of restuffing all of the Bakelite capacitors at the moment. It’s actually not too bad. The tar scrapes right out when it’s heated up. Next will be the metal box labeled as “condenser bank”
