Philco 32-7981 audio output transformer replacement

Hello GRG,
That is great news you found the sweet spot .

One popular thing that many old radio people do is to build a low powered Am transmitter to broadcast content to their vintage receivers. Philco actually used to manufacture wireless record players that had a transmitter in them, but some companies used to sell what was called a "Phonograph Oscillator", AES used to sell a kit based on a Brand Z phono oscillator, but there are alternatives. I just don't like adding jacks and extra holes to chassis in vintage sets, I've seen too many that were poorly installed and caused all sorts of problems with hum.

Thank you for the added comments.

This set has a phono jack that works very well when I attach my outboard bluetooth receiver to the set so no need for additional holes for aux input.

I also have a Spitfire AM transmitter connected to the ear phone jack of my stereo. I use it to play fm, cds, records etc. over AM 1400 and broadcast to any/all radios in the house.

Hello Glen,
I do the same with my General Electric console it really is a nice sounding set too mine has like a 12 inch woofer with two 6V6's in pushpull .

Arran, I agree with requiring caution in "modding" a chassis, but I have not been anywhere as happy with the sound from an AM transmitter as I am with direct in audio. Yes, RCA, Zenith, Philco and others made "phono oscillators. My 41-255 had a sticker advertising Phono and TV sound (some Pre-War TVs had only line level audio to save money) "The wireless way"

Adding an external input jack could be considered "period" if using period parts, as this may ha e been a common mod made by a TV shop, especially if the set was sold with an external phono attachment. RCA manufactured and sold a jack and switch panel complete with a wiring harness with instructions for modding the circuit. Some Zenith wiring diagrams (for example the official Zenith documents for the 6-S-27 / 6-S-52) contained a schematic for adding a phono / radio switch. A clean mod can be made by using an external metal box or panel and switch, with wiring passing through a convenient hole in the chassis. Existing screws and / or screw holes can be used for mounting. Under chassis plugs can be used to add or remove the device. Ahis can be acceptable on all but the most expensive or historically important sets.

I forgot that this may have been a Canadian built Philco, some of those came from the factory with (ironically) RCA phono jacks in the rear apron of the chassis. I'm working on a Canadian DeForest set from around 1940, built by Rogers, and it has screw terminals for a phono input, but my DeForest Crosley "Brahms" does not, someone made and absolute hack job of installing a phono jack, and rotary switch in the rear apron, which I immediately removed, it would seem that they did not own a 1/4'' drill bit so they made their holes by drilling a series of smaller holes in a circle, right through one of the paper labels by the way. I cleaned up the holes and used a pair of caps like you would use to fill knock outs in a electrical panel. Why they didn't just use one of those phono jack install kits that screw into the back of the cabinet, I have no idea, those had a shielded cable that would connect to the top end of the volume control through a slide switch.
Regards
Arran
