any value in this or should I make a trip to the dump?
#1

Hi everyone! I am new and just want some opinions.....its a philco radio 40-508. I have no interest into restoring it and want to know if its worth trying to sell? I figured a philco forum would know best!

Hi,
PLEASE, don't take it to the dump whatever you do.
I know you don't want to restore it, (which wouldn't take too much doing) but even if you can't sell it, let the others here know your location and they would give it a good home.

Even though collectors don't always go for a phonograph model, someone may still want that one.
This set uses the same chassis is the
40-508 40-508 40-515

Ron may know if this is the same chassis as the 40-180, I dind't have time to compare the two drawings, but the dial looked the same.

Give it a little time, and someone will hopefully save it.

any idea on value at all and thank you for the response!

Values may vary, but if I needed the chassis and speaker alone, I'd pay $40-$50 just for those. That would be an in person sale, because shipping would be another issue.

Again, depending on where you are located, there may be a member nearby who can make you an offer. Or someone can give another idea of value. "Worth" and value on these old sets can vary. If this was at a local auction, it might go for $5 to $25 depending on the people there. Some dealers might think it is worth a fortune and go even higher.Othere might not want to mess with it at all and go for minimum bid.

Just figure out what you need for the set, and put it up for sale in the classified section here. It's worth a try.
Wait until Ron or Chuck checks in on this post. They might have a different idea of the value of your set.

Good luck.

Hello "dlucas," and welcome.

Where are you located? I take it to be Columbus, Ohio, according to your email address?

As Gary has mentioned, this set does not have very much monetary value; especially since it has been painted black. But I also agree with Gary in that you should not merely take it to the dump. Someone will probably want it. If I were closer and had room, I would take it. I used to have a 40-508, but the cabinet was water damaged at the bottom. I ended up getting rid of it because of a lack of room. Otherwise, I probably would have kept it and tried to restore it; this is an uncommon Philco model, even though it isn't worth a lot.

Again, as Gary said, try placing an ad in the Philco For Sale or Trade section here, and see what happens.

Another thought: if you are so inclined, and if you are in the Columbus, Ohio area, the Central Ohio Antique Radio Association (COARA) is holding a radio swap meet next Saturday, January 15, from 8 am to 10:30 am at Leawood Elementary School, 1677 South Hamilton Road in Columbus. I-70 Exit 107, just north of I-70 on OH 317 (Hamilton Road).

More info here:

We attended their "Cabin Fever" meet last January, and it was a very good meet with a lot of sellers and buyers. You should show up early and either take the set in or walk around and distribute flyers (which you could print using your computer) advertising the radio for sale. Just a thought.

Forgot to mention...the chassis of the 40-508 is similar to, but not exactly the same as, a 40-150/155/180/185/190. The 508 uses two 42 output tubes and an 80 rectifier; the others use two 41 tubes and an 84 rectifier.

Too bad I'm not off this Saturday. I'd love to go. Hmmm probably a good thing, I'm running out of room.. Icon_smile

This chassis will also give you a dedicated "phono" input built into it that the 40-180 style chassis doesn't have, but probably should have had in the first place. Philco wanted you to buy their additional wireless turntable separately. It'll give you a place to hook up your own sound source with no or very little modification.
