Correct Pushbuttons and Grille Cloth for 40-185 console
#1

Several months ago I purchased a 40-185 console in almost mint condition from a consignment antique store. I plan to clean up the chassis, recap it, replace the missing pushbuttons, and polish up the finish on the cabinet. I have two questions I need to have answered before I get too far into the restoration project.

Radio Daze has two versions of the octagon buttons used on the 40-185. One set is brown, and the other is rose-colored. Since my old console has no buttons at all, I can't determine which buttons are correct for this model. In addition, the original grille cloth has been removed and replaced by some hideous floral material that looks like it should have been used to upholster a sofa.

If anyone is familiar with the item numbers used by Radio Daze, could you please advise me as to which pushbutton and grille cloth designs are correct for a 40-185.

Thanks!

Mike - Welcome!

1940 Philcos such as yours used the translucent red (wine) pushbuttons. The brown buttons are used in 1941 Philco sets.

The correct grillecloth is the Philco "Large Diamond" pattern, #27 from Radio Grille Cloth Headquarters.
