NEW Question: 38 116 dial mechanism and dial scale alignment
#1

I am trying to finish this up and I am having trouble aligning the dial scale.

The mechanism has a stop at 12 o'clock on the chassis that keep the dial from spinning around more than 360 degrees (middle picture).  When I put the dial on, it stops at that position and the scale reads about 950 kc (bottom pic, the chassis top is on the right side in this photo).

This should be the point where the scale reads either 1600 or 570 kc.  I don't see how this will work.  There is no other way I can see to put the assembly together where it lines up the way I think it should.  Does anyone know how this goes on?

Thanks,
Steve

Something is not on the right way, I did a 38-116xx a year ago and remember having a headache over something similar but I finally figured it out. The center hub may not be on the right way? Sorry cant help, is that a new dial scale?, maybe the notch is in the wrong spot?

The dial scale is original.  I'll keep trying. I just don't see what it could be  right now. Maybe tomorrow.  Thanks Fred.

Somewhere here are posts with assy instruction to this dial.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

I searched a few times and very little comes up.  It's likely something simple,  I just don't know what.

Thanks. I tried those sites too. I just have to take some time next weekend to go over it in more detail.  I have a few parts chassis, one I took apart already. It seems I put it together right based on that.

I am missing something obvious I bet!

Perhaps this will help?

Thanks Ron,  I looked at that bulletin also.  I'll take it with me this week to re read; maybe I missed something.

I have it set up properly now.

There are two detents on the dial, 180 degrees apart from each other.  One is very small, the other is larger and more noticeable.  The larger one is the wrong one.  I was using that one to slide over the keyway on the mechanism.

The other is very small and I never noticed it until today.  It is the right one and slides over the keyway and puts the dial in alignment

I need stronger glasses!

I have a new question.

When I touch the automatic tuning handle slightly the radio mutes as it should but when I let go it stays mute unless I toggle it a few times. I believe the order in which I put it together is proper.  This hasn't been a problem on my other automatic tuning sets so I believe it is not working right.

Does anyone have an idea what may be wrong? I am referring to the bulletin and it really doesn't have an order listed in the diagrams.

I have her playing great except for this minor issue.

Happy Thanksgiving,

The auto tune handle should go about 1/2 way in (at least it does on my 37-116) then you should feel the spring as it goes the rest of the way in.

Sounds like something is not installed right or is missing???

Hi Steve,

I just finished refurbishing my automatic tuning dial on the 38-690 here. It is the spring tension of the moveable audio shorting switch (item #61 in the automatic tuning bulletin) that causes the control handle to pop back out when pushed inward. When working properly, the control handle should pop back out, even when pushed only slightly inward.

It seems likely to me that your problem might be caused either by lack of proper tension of the moveable audio switch contact or possibly by incorrect assembly of the moveable audio switch contact. Note that when the tension of this switch is proper, it is necessary to push down slighty on the contact end of the moveable audio switch with a small screwdriver while inserting it into the slot on the handle hub as the handle hub is pushed onto the shaft.

I hope this helps.

Ed
