38-4xx: did these have a back originally
#1

Hi all, was wondering if somebody could tell me if the 38-4xx console originally had a back on it. I have one that someone put a masonite back on. Obviously not original equipment. Also has no venting. Just a solid board. Probably should at least have a few vent holes, right?

Yes.

And yes...a few vent holes...

Thanks Ron. Were they masonite or some cardboard type of material? Also would like to know what it looked like. Maybe I could cut this one to match.

If you do a search for 38-116XX back or 38-690XX back, the 38-4XX back looked basically the same as those two - only sized to fit that cabinet.

I think the originals were closer to masonite than cardboard, although they have a texture somewhat similar to cardboard. Surviving original backs are very fragile and easily broken.

Thanks again Ron. I'll look those up and see what I can find. Appreciate the help. So much good information here. Ed

Found it. Man, there's a lot of holes in that thing. Still, looks doable. May give it a try. Thanks again. Ed
