Magnavox Windsors
#1

I have had a Magnavox Windsor with the additional upper shelving unit...minus its original guts...with the exception of the turntable. I have found another complete Windsor and am debating 'transplanting' the guts from the 'new' to the 'old' as the color variation is pretty significant between the 2.
In searching the internet I see that with the upper unit there was a 'TV' setting on the function selector as the tv signal from the upper unit tv was routed through the amp. So my complete lower unit would not be correct. So wondering if anyone has thoughts....not bother and wait for an original? They are not common thats for sure...may be a long wait. Also looking for its original TV unit.

Thanks Folks

Jeff

WOW x 3! Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup

You are in a dilemma indeed, Jeff. It's a shame that Imperial Windsor is missing all of its electronics.

Here is the difference:

The Windsor is just the lower cabinet (with all of the associated electronics, of course).

The Imperial Windsor (also known by some as the Windsor Imperial) includes the upper cabinet with TV.

I've seen an Imperial Windsor in someone's collection. Very huge...and very impressive. Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup

well I now have both...with one set of guts minus the tv Ron! wondering whether to put them in the Imperial...the wood tone does not match between the two Windsor cabinets.

What say you?

I would hate to gut the Windsor to have something to put into the Imperial Windsor cabinet.

My suggestion would be to keep the WIndsor intact and find some "guts" for the Imperial Windsor, even if it means settling for something lower-grade, such as the "guts" from a Regency Symphony (which would look the same to the untrained eye, save for the rare and expensive horn tweeter).

Regency Symphonies are easier to come by than Windsors, after all...just a thought. Maybe you can find a beat up but otherwise complete Regency Symphony?

I don't know what to suggest for the TV.

I have now purchased a set of electronics ...tho from what I can gather from conversation it is a Windsor set....which is fine. I had already decided along the line of keeping everything intact as they are....The thought of gutting this
well preserved Windsor was not acceptable.

Then this set of electronics appears. It is odd how fast things move sometimes where otherwise you wait for years, hunting for parts....oh well such is life.

I will post some pictures when I get the gear.

Hey Jeff,

That's great! Icon_thumbup Yes, it is amazing how quickly some things can come together...literally! Icon_biggrin

The Windsor amp uses four 6L6 outputs while the Regency amp uses four 6V6 tubes. I think the tuners are similar in both.

When I saw the picture of your Windsor, my eyes about popped out of my head! I couldn't believe what I was seeing! #1, it is BEAUTIFUL! #2, I have the electronics out of one of those or something very similar. I bought mine from an old TV tech (my mentor) back before I could even drive. I always called it my "radio set". I would even take it with me when I spent nights at my grandparents house. I was so fascinated by this rig. The eye tubes were most interesting. I had to replace the power transformer on the FM tuner. It developed a short and would get hot and sizzle. Worked ok tho. Blew a wet electrolytic on the amp/power supply. It has the 2 big speakers with field coils on each. My amp looks different tho. Mine uses 2 5Y3's and 4 6V6 output tubes. Another project I hope to restore someday. I wont have a cabinet but do have shelves! I had NEVER seen another until now! Thanks for sharing!

You may have the guts of one of these two I am guessing....The Belvedere...(with the brass escutcheon) is an older set I think 1946 or 1947...it has the add-on FM tuner. It uses two 6L6's in the amp....two 12 inch speakers.

The other is what I am guessing you have...it is the Regency Symphony ...a bit later maybe 1948 or 1949 with built in FM tuner...yours having the add on would be more in the immediate post-war I am guessing. It uses push-pull 6V6 in the amp section and also two 12 inch speakers.

Both are good performers and I use them as mono-block amps to power the stereo channels off my computer and also roku, appletv..etc

There are cabinets that show up on Craig's List...might be fun to pop yours back in a cabinet!

cheers..

Jeff

Ill have to dig mine out to snap some pics. Mine look like Jeff's in the 2nd and 3rd pics down from the top. My AM is a shortwave and BC band, with the 3 6J5 tubes in back, the FM is separate and looks like Jeff's. My speakers I think are the 2 12" with the field coils. They have gotten pretty rough from years of me handling them. The amp looks completely different. Mine looks much larger. It has the 4 6V6s laid out in a square and the 5Y3 tubes are on the opposite side by the electrolytics. It has a large power transformer and a weird looking coupling transformer, then a fair size output trans. Mine do not look as nice. They came from a basement, and have some rust on the back. Got some mismatched knobs and wear from being handled. I am setting up a radio repair room, so when I get things ready, I will share some pics of this rig. Right now, it is buried is plastic boxes to mouse and moisture proof.
