Found a really pristine 38-116 locally for a real good price.
Cabinet looks awesome and the chassis looks like new.
Guy has not played it at all, so he does not if it works or not.
Just a piece of eye candy for his living room.
Don't really need another of these, but the price is right.
Will have to sit next to the other 38-116 or the 37-116 I presently have.
Don't know if I want to re-cap it, or just re-sell for a few extra bucks.
These are a real challenge to work on as you all know.
Will be selling this one as soon as I figure out what it is worth.
In the condition this one is in, it ain't going cheap.
One owner and babied obviously.
Cabinet is awesome. No veneer issues or flaws other than a few very small chips on the edge of the front ledge under the knobs. Very easy touchup with a Q tip.
Chassis is amazing. very, very clean with no rust etc. Transformers all look like new with no tar, scratches etc.
The radio still works to boot. Brought it up on the variac and it plays strong with hardly any noticeable humm.
Does need the switches and bandswitch cleaned as it has not been used for years.
Speaker and clarifiers look like new as well.
Looks like it has the hold downs for the back cover too. No back though.
This is a pristine condition radio perfect for an electronic restoration.
If I can get a good price for it, I will sell it and park it in the Philco row.
Check it out guy's, won't find a nicer one than this.
P.S.
I have not taken the chassis out and looked underneath, but I am sure you will find it is clean and original.

A 38-116 for a good price that is pristine should not be passed up.

Was this the one for sale on craigslist located in Stillwater for $100 or best offer?

If it's in pristine original condition why not keep this one and trade or sell the 38-116 you already own that's no so pristine? At least that's what I would do, cycle in the set in better original condition, and cycle out the other in favor of a 16B or something?

Better yet swap the chassis so one is both pristine and works. Unless the other chassis is much better looking one.

Hi guy's,
I am considering both options presently.
The other one that I have has a very nice cabinet and finish as well.
I read on here before that this radio in average condition is worth in the $300-$400 range.
Not sure if that is re-capped or not re-capped.
Can you guy's enlighten me?
I know you can find them once in a while for $100 with an average condition cabinet and non working.
Re-capped has to add significant value to one of these due to the complexity of the chassis.
And then I have seen others that are re-capped and re-finished for ridiculous asking prices.
Opinions welcome.

It may add value if the right buyer comes along. For me it at best does not change it, at worst, if the recap is done without restuffing, it reduces it. In any case I would like to do my recapping myself.
Some people would like for someone to do it for them, they might pay more.

That is one nice radio Murf. Having some options on what you want to do is always good.
I found a 37-116 on craigs list last year for 100.00. It has had the ecaps changed and that's all so far.
Hope to get to it in the near future, I don't play it though it does play, till I recap it.
Good luck with what ever you decide.

Looks nice. Bet you wouldn't sell it for what you paid?

That's crazy, my 37-116 has the same wear over the same two control knobs. My is in very similar condition and I paid $85 for it last fall. Won't sell it but of I did it wouldn't be for 4 or 5 times what I payed for it. I don't see this hobby as a way to make money so much as a way to bring back and preserve history. It's not about the $$$. It's about putting them in the hands of people that will use and enjoy them.

Hi SD,
I agree.
I buy some to keep for my own collection, and I buy some to repair and sell for a profit.
What I enjoy the most is getting the radio home and getting it playing again.
I learn a little more with each one.
Each one is a training excersize for me.

The $300-$400 would be for an electrically restored set I believe (verified restored of course) , they are not rare enough to be worth that for an unrestored example, even with a decent finish on the cabinet, since someone who wants one can always wait until another unrestored 37 or 38-116 shows up for a better price. When you mention one being listed for a ridiculous asking price I gather that was from Grand Canyon Tube Radio or some similar online boutique. He has had a 37-10 and a 38-116 on there for sale for at least 16 years, both with the wrong grille cloth, incorrectly refinished, no decals, and the dial escutcheon polished, for four figures each.
