Atlas Radio
#1

Ever see an Atlas radio? I bought one for 10 bucks. Looks like a National Union post war product, Says made for Atlas Distributors on bottom, label mostly gone. Atlas is fron Newark NJ, everyones' favorite city. NU was from newark I believe, I will work on posting picture. Icon_rolleyes

Why did I buy it, because it was cheap at the time the swap was closing down, I dont have one, and I liked the cabinet.

Only one I could find doing web search.

How about this National Union?  I saw a thread where the same radio was branded an Atlas:

http://radioatticarchives.com/radio.htm?radio=5421

But to answer your original question, no, I don't recall ever seeing one.

In my best walter Winchell, "Not only has Ness dealt Frank Nitti a blow from which he will not recover he has also solved the Atlas Radio Mystery". Looks like her Mr. Ness, although the dial glass is different and says ATLAS on the bottom. The label looks like the same printing thought the names are different and they both indicate Newark. I thought someone may have thrown some Emerson knobs on mine but they look the same as on the one in the photo. Icon_smile

I found a similar one in radio Museum Org, indicated 2 AF stages, I have sets with an xtra RF stage, what's up with 2 AF stages? Is it a typo?

It does have an RF stage; here is the schematic for the National Union:

The xtra 12SK7, I see. I lke the way they prefix all the tubes with NU. Chassis has not been worked on though someone replaced the power cord with one that they could use if they bring back electrocutions.

If I could find the place called "Somewhere", I could find "Anything" Icon_confused

Here are some shots of the Atlas, I am not collecting in bunches, just one here and there these days. I think the cabinet will look sharp when done up. The dial glass has paint on both sides and dial lamps on each side.

That looks like a good one with the dual dial lamps to turn down lights and listen to the ball game on.
Are you going to refinish or just try to clean up the cabinet?

That's a nice set that should be a good performer, I also like that it is a set that isn't very common.

Well a good cleaning is first up and clean the glass too, then see how it comes out. It is not really scratched or gouged so it should look OK. The wear on the roll top look near the dial is rough.

Yeah it is an oddball, maybe a good way to collect would be just look for the uncommon,,,,,,

Thanks for checking her out.

Have updated some photos, the dial glass cleaned up very well, the cabinet well not so much. Got most of the dust and grime but appearance not much better. Some lacquer flaking on top, so maybe a Howards treatment? The chassis is pretty clean, a bit alarming though the brown cord attached to the chassis was cut about an inch outside the chassis and a gray cord taped with friction tape as a replacement.

Any votes on the cabinet? Howards?

Thx for looking.

My experience with Howard's is it will make that overall cabinet look a little better, but it might not do much for the simulated roll-top sections.

It kind of depends on how bad the cabinet bothers you.  If you like the scars of surviving all these years then lay on some Howard's and a few days later some nice paste wax.  I personally prefer the original finish with some imperfections, but everyone has their own threshold of tolerance in that area.

Also, if you refinish be careful, that strip by the knobs might be photo-finish.

I have that same feeling, it is in OK shape and not too scratched. Perhaps the photo fin could be retained and the rest of the wood done over without it coming out 1/2 old 1/2 new looking if that makes any sense?

The Atlas is done, mostly. Maybe a piece of wire for sleeving but the cabinet by Fred T. looks great and with the assistance of a fellow NEARC member the caps are changed out and it plays well. Looks very fine, thanks Fred. Icon_clap

Addtl photos added to album.
